Obituary of Margaret L.W. Porter

Margaret Louise Washington Porter departed this life on Sunday, December 23, 2012. she was born in Yancey Mills, Virginia to the late Marvin R. and Helen Washington on May 22, 1927. Two brothers and one sister predeceased her in death. In her early years, Margaret became a member of Piedmont Baptist Church in Yancey Mills, Virginia. Margaret attended and received her Nursing Degree from Dixie Hospital, now Hampton University School of Nursing, Hampton, Virginia. She later moved to New Jersey and secured a position as a nurse at Newark City Hospital, (now know as UMDNJ), working in the maternity ward. Margaret met the late Oliver Porter and they married in 1952. From this union five children were born. After the birth of her fourth child, Margaret became a stay at home mom until 1974 and then became a Public Health Nurse for the City of East Orange. She remained there for twenty years before retiring in March of 1994. Margaret and Oliver lived in East Orange, New Jersey until they relocated to Atco, New Jersey in 2000. Margaret leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Toni Porter, Glenda Oliver-Smith, Michele Harris; one son Glen Porter, also Delden Miller, who was like a son to her; one son-in-law Harris; three grandchildren, Towan Oliver, Isaiah Releford and Jasmin Harris; two sister-in-laws, Lavenia Porter and Anita Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Oliver and another son, Michael. A Memorial Service in honor of Margaret will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11:00am at United Missionary Baptist Church, 228 south Harrison Street, East Orange, NJ.
