I was so saddened when I read of Mitch passing. A flood of wonderful memories came to me instantly. His gentle caring ways and genuine love for music has left a mark on me I will carry through life. My condolances to his beautiful family.

We did not have the privilege to have known Mitch long, but it was a blessing to have known him if even for a brief time. He came into my daughters lives when he sponsored their participation in SJAWE's annual side by side concert last year. Megan and Moriah were blessed to play in that concert and later, sat by Mitch in the pit as he played "West Side Story" for what would be his final HHS musical. He joked how he had performed that music so many times throughout his life as he guided my daughters through their first experience in a pit orchestra. He was a gentle, kind, and magnificent gentleman who will be forever remembered for sharing his love of music!

I remember my dad taking me to Phillies games. I was quite young when he first started taking me. He loved the Phillies all his life. It was so much fun sharing in that passion with him. I asked lots of questions about baseball and he patiently explained it all to me. All my life I have continued to ask him questions about baseball. I will never know as much about that game as he did!

I remember playing in the pit orchestra with Mitch in The Music Man. He had counted how many times he had to play the bass "riff" in Marion the Librarian - and he did it every time!
I remember when he played with Barrington Band - how he enjoyed the music - always a sweet smile - like this picture!
I remember last summer at Tom Patton's concert = how in spite of his weight loss - he wanted to play for a friend.
I especially remember the last time he played with Barrington when he felt better. It was so good to see and hear him.
He had a unique talent and personality.
Even though I didn't get to see him often, I always looked forward to when I did see him.

Mitch's smile of gentle happiness whenever during services or a teaching our eyes would meet.
His whole-body way of communicating approval and support.
His evident joy that our "little shul that could" chugged along with simplicity.
His happiness to have Peg by his side.
Arriving at his and Peg's home a few weeks ago to find Mitch sitting out front in a sun beam.
What a lovely man. From my spirit to yours on the journey into Mystery and Music of the Worlds beyond our awareness, eternal love and appreciation.

Mitch Hitman came into our lives over a decade ago when he was recommended to play in the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble. Over the years Mitch always volunteered to play the clarinets or Saxophones that were needed by the band. He was a musician, a helper, a worker, and above all, a gentleman. His smile was contagious and he always had something positive to add to any discussion. He was a mentor and friend to those who sat near him in the band and he will be greatly missed.
