The below is the eulogy I delivered for Dad for all of his family and friends who could not attend yesterday's viewing and service:
"Be Hard, Firm, Fair and Impartial”.
——— A Quote from my Father’s former colleague at the Cherry Hill PD., Mr. Larry Leaf.
It was a lesson that our Father passed onto him (Detective Leaf or as Mom reminded me that night "Larry the Leaf" no disrespect intended) as a young patrolman in the force. And those words within themselves probably best define how he lived his life and how he raised his children even though he may not have said it.
-Be Hard-
Our Father was always a hard worker who didn’t shy away from a task around the house or on the job no matter the difficulty;
he taught us how to wrench a car,
how to swing a hammer,
how to turn the Earth,
and how to stay focused on a job until complete.
-Be Firm-
Our Father was always unwavering in his decisions and precise in his communications……He let you know what he thought. …….. : )
-Be Fair-
Our Father treated us equally, making sure that each of us knew that we were special in our own ways.
- Be Impartial-
Our Father treated everyone he met as he would wish to be treated himself; striking up conversations with random strangers and helping those in need.
__________
Our Father lived a full life;
and with all of the good that our Father was,
he like the rest of us, had his own personal demons to overcome.
Those demons manifested themselves in panic attacks, which held him back from living life to the fullest.
For that, I am sad; He had a great smile, beautiful eyes………
and lots of good advice to share to with anyone he met. (Whether they wanted it or not) : )
He is free from those demons now, and rest assured, he is at peace in Heaven.
We are a reflection of our Father, however gently tempered by our Mother.
A very sweet, loving and unbelievably strong woman who treasures the man she loves.
One of the last word’s from my Father,
which he shared with his Family;
It was the only word that we could clearly hear through the ventilator mask for more than three days by his side;
A Steely ice blue stair locked my eyes unto his;
From the mask He BOOMED;
“Thank you!”
In my heart, I knew what he meant in that moment:
Thank you for being here with me;
Thank you for taking care of your Mother;
Thank you for being my children.
I knew in that exchange that he was at peace; at that moment I knew it was his time to pass; I am at peace with that moment we shared and so should you.
(He passed 25 minutes later at 1310 on the 13th.)
The other morning I was sitting in Dad’s chair at the kitchen table and over a bowl of oatmeal he channeled his last words to me, for all of you, visiting with him today: (You have to read it with his voice and tone....it reads better.)
Roses are red;
-Violets are blue;
Do not be sad
-I’m with Mom and Dad;
My life was long;
-And full of your love;
With Jesus by my side;
-I look over you all with pride;
Live YOUR life without fear;
-Be strong with compassion;
Live each day as if your last;
-And I will see you in Heaven.
~~~~~~Domenic D. Mancini~~~~~~~
Thank you all for your kind words and condolences; it has made a difficult time much easier.
Best regards,
Victor J. Mancini Sr.
Dom was my training officer at the Cherry Hill Police Department in 1967. I rode with Dom on many nights. He taught me the ropes and we became friends. Dom never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was always cheerful and a great training officer. If you had a question, you could always ask Dom. He will be missed by members of the CHPD.
Judith and family, I am so sorry for your loss Dom was my first Training Coach at CHPD. He trained me well. After training he always checked up with me whether I did good or bad. I use to give him irreuglar socks from Garwoods for Christmas as a joke. I signed off for lunch at your house on Union Ave to make him Laugh. He was my Mentor, He made me the Cop I became. The world lost a good man. Dom taught me from day one, "Be Hard, Firm, Fair and Impartial". I never forgot that. RIP Dom. And thank you for being there for me. Larry Leaf
