What Makes a Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,

The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,

The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. Socrates
Joseph 'Richard' Blalock was a persevering, determined man who lived a purposeful life.
He grew up in the Raleigh, North Carolina area from birth to seventeen years of age. During his childhood, he faced many challenges and setbacks. At age seven, he lost his father. Because they were a family of ten kids after this family tragedy, Richard and his three younger siblings had to live in an orphanage in Oxford, North Carolina for a few years until they were old enough to help on the family tobacco farm.
Although he wasn't able to complete his education, he learned the trade and art of auto body work. His skills grew through the years and became a master craftsman in his field for 63 years.
During his adult life, he lived in Philadelphia, PA which is when he met the love of his life Wanda Blosser and moved to South Jersey. They raised two children Lisa Torkewitz(Bob) and Edward Blalock(Jeanine) who have given them seven grandchildren: Kyle Blalock, Natalie Blalock, Perry Blalock, Sarah Blalock, Caitlyn West, Robert Torkewitz, Jr and Allison Torkewitz.
Of the ten siblings, Chester Blalock, Sally Fin, Shirley Macon, Gerald Blalock are still living.
From Lisa and Ed's childhood, they have many memories of "Marathon" fishing adventures; camping "road trips" to visit family; harvesting 2 acres of produce every summer and helping to care for the many animals on our mini farm.
Dad modeled what perseverance, determination, and hard work looked like while also valuing family. Everything he modeled was centered on survival skills. Dad also showed us how to argue and disagree without holding a grudge.
Through his children and grandchildren, his Legacy and life lessens will carry-on through the generations.
