My friend. When I moved to Atco in October, 1961, I was in 6th grade and almost 12 years old. You were 9 years older. OMG I am dating us both. Your dad was living then and we met the Murphy’s early on. As I grew older, into my later teen age years, you and I became close friends. My mother and I were frequent visitors. You and your Mom (she’ll always be Mrs Murphy to me) went food shopping every Saturday morning. Mrs Murphy would call and say, “come on over for a samich (her pronunciation). Lunch meats, cheeses, breads, condiments were all on the table. Everything was “just so” as it always was when you were involved. Your Mom was always so much fun. She would say to us, “you’ll always remember me when I’m gone.” She was so right. I know we have thought of our mothers and missed them every day of our lives.
I just never thought of you being gone! You were a constant in my life, my touchstone, and I always knew you were there, even during the times when I wasn’t such a great friend. I always loved you and no matter what, I knew you loved me.
I was so happy that you had Cal, even if it wasn’t long enough. I was honored to help you care for him, although you stepped right up to the plate and did things for him that you never thought you could do!
I know how proud you were to be Kirsten’s godmother, just as she was to have you. You and I always called her “our girl” and she is. I spent many hours at your house when I was pregnant, usually eating! I had my first labor pain when I was having dinner with you two! How proud we’ve been that she is so sweet and such a good person.
There are so many things I have to say. I’ll say them every night as I lay in bed unable to sleep. All that you have to do is listen.
I hope you’re resting now with your Mom, Dad, Joe, and Cal. Until I see you again, I love you
Candy
