I am honored to have known Joe through ACCESS-US. People with intellectual disabilities often need champions to help them have the opportunity to live, work and play in their community. Joe was a visionary champion for people in New Jersey and throughout the country. He will be sorely missed.

Joe was a colleague and true professional. Always keeping in mind the best welfare of clients. He was the ultimate "Servant Leader" and it was a privilege to know him.

I worked for the Occupational Training Center at the Marlton Adult Center for several years in the mid 80's and knew Mr. Bender only in a professional manner. That said, I often think of the wise counsel he gave when I turned in my resignation to begin working for the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities. Everything he said that I could expect to happen working for a State agency came to pass. He spoke the unvarnished truth to me, and I appreciated that. In my thirty years working for DDD, I often thought back to what he told me.
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
