Mary,
I'm so sorry that you have left us. You taught me how to really LOVE playing the flute - you made it an accessible and wonderful instrument and gave me some serious self-confidence along the journey which lasts until this day. I have you to thank for such wonderful memories during my youth - ravioli making with my grandmother, fun stories during my flute lessons and an introduction to delicious acorn squash! You were like an aunt to me. I'm so sorry that I did not keep in better touch with you post-college. May you keep playing your flute in paradise with that gorgeous tone of yours. Your spirit will be sorely missed, but it goes on in the students that you touched and the music you made us truly feel and treasure. Thank you for the care and the attention you gave me as a student. You made me feel like family along the way.
Love,
Becky Tavani

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of such a wonderful, talented woman. Mary touched my life in a dramatic and lasting way when she presented a lesson to my middle school music class on the many types of flutes. As a young person, just beginning my study of the flute, I was amazed and inspired by Mary. She was my teacher through middle school and high school and helped me to successfully audition for college. She had endless patience as a teacher, and I loved the hours I spent with her, both at the Haddonfield School and at her home, surrounded by the singing of her birds. I am so very grateful for her impact on my life and will miss her dearly.

I worked at PATCO with Mary's husband Dick for several years. Even though I only met Mary a few times it was very obvious that she was truly a remarkable woman.
My heartfelt condolences are extended to her entire family.

My sincere sympathy to Mary's family. I've known Mary for the past several years. She played with UpTown Flutes regularly over the years, and recorded with us on 2 of our 3 CDs. I shared conversations and adventures with her on the IFO tour last year. Mary seemed able to conquer any obstacle, including cancer.
Mary never dwelled on her troubles, despite the seriousness of her health issues. I so admired her refusal to let cancer dictate how she lived her life, performing, traveling, always up for a new experience. What a wonderful role model for us all! Mary will be missed.
With sympathy, Karen Demsey, member of UpTown Flutes, IFO, flute professor at Willliam Paterson University, Wayne, NJ.

To The Berk Family, we extend our heartfelt condelences. We had the pleasure of meeting Mary during a very special time. She helped our son prepare for a duet performance during his Bar Mitzvah. We are forever grateful for her dedication and assistance. May God bless you with peace and may you find comfort and joy in your memories.

I was saddened to learn of Mary's passing. We were friends during her Lawrence, Guadalajara and Indiana University days. Unfortunately as the years went by we lost touch but she remained in my thoughts. A lovely lady and a talented musician. My heart goes out to her family. Paul Whelan, Ph.D.

So sorry to read of this loss. Sympathy to her family and to all who were fortunate enough to have a little Mary in their lives. I was a private student of Mary's in Oak Park through high school, and college years (early summer mornings with Mary and music, delightful!). Through house-buying on Home and her recuperation with her parents in California. I shared my love of Higgins Glass with her and took her Norfolk Pine home with me when she was preparing to head out East and get married! So sorry to see her go then, and truly so to lose her now. Have been trying to locate her for quite a while (not easy with the name change). So sad to have found her today and so appropriate as I am excited about attending a flute fair this weekend. She will always be a part of my soul. I can recognize her past students when the perform - what a fabulous teacher, and friend for a time.

Mary, you were a great friend to me. We shared so many sweet times as friends in Chicago, my lessons when I was unprepared; the times we spent together, and our experience moving you out to Richard's apartment after you were married- I'm very sad that you are not there to call and say hello to you. I loved talking with you. I always thought of you as a deep friend. You inspired me to live my life with a positive lightness of being. I will miss that greatness and sweet intelligence of your spirit Mary.
