Albert Lewko

Obituary of Albert J. Lewko

Age 88, of Haddon Township NJ, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2011 following a short illness. Devoted husband of 48 years of the late Eleanor (nee Szwak) and beloved father of the late Thomas and brother of the late Edward. Cherished father and proud "JaJu"/Grandpa of son Alan, daughter-in-law Kim and their children Stephanie, Kelly and Jake as well as son Ken, daughter-in-law Jill, their son Cole, their daughter Kate and son-in- law Wendell Beres. Absolutely adored "GGpa" of great granddaughters Riley and Avery Beres. Uncle to Elaine and Ray Angelino, brother-in-law of Terri and the late Paul Adcock, Steve and Nancy Szwak, Antoinette and the late Edward Kato, George and Libby Kato and all of their families. Al served proudly in the U.S. Naval Air Force from 1940 to 1945 and continued his service in the Naval Reserve until 1950. He then joined the Haddon Township Police Department, serving there until 1953 when he moved to the New Jersey State Police for a brief period before returning home to Haddon Township and rising through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 1968. Chief Lewko retired from the Police Department in 1978 and had remained active within the South Jersey Suburban Police Chiefs Association, PBA, Camden County and New Jersey Chiefs and the Retired Police and Fireman Local #11 where he leaves behind many treasured friends. Al will be remembered fondly by all those who knew him and had the privilege to call him friend. Always one to lend a hand, Al would make the rounds distributing his freshly caught fish and fruits of his garden to many grateful recipients. His smiling face delivering his "world renowned" Jersey tomatoes and butternut squash will be sorely missed but his loving and generous spirit will continue to live on in his family and friends as they strive to emulate his extraordinary strength of character and unwavering love of family. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice as a way to honor Al's giving spirit. Please join family and friends as they celebrate the life of Al Lewko on April 6 at Emmaus Catholic Community Parish - Holy Maternity Church, 431 Nicholson Rd Audubon NJ. Visitation will be at 10 AM, followed by a mass at 11 AM. Internment will immediately follow at St Joseph's Cemetery in Chew's Landing. Flags at all Haddon Township municipal properties and offices will be flown at half mast throughout the month of April in Chief Lewko's honor.
