Uncle Sumant was a huge help to me when i first moved to the US in 1994. At my urging my parents had moved me to New York at age 21. Knowing that he was there was a huge help both for my parents who were still sailing, and for me, a totally fresh off the boat desi. He was kind and generous and always had words of wisdom and advice for me. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

Knowning Sam through two years of training in Dufferin has been my distinct pleasure. As a band leader he provided team spirit and leadership that was warm and genuine. He was a gentleman and then an officer. Met him & his wife again in NJ for our batchmates get together and he was still the same guy that I knew in 1965 - 1967.
Great guy. Proud to have known him. Will miss him.

Dear Sumant - Apart from the Dufferin days I have some very pleasant memories of our stay in the seamans club Mumbai when we were down for second mates sometime in 1970. Our frequent round of billiards , dinners at Shere Punjab , breakfast at Hardinge's , travel to LBS college and many other happy and fun moments. Thank you very much for being a part of my life . The news of Sumant's demise was a huge shock.
As I reflect on our long-time friendship, I can only be grateful that Sumant had been a part of my life. I was lucky to have been present at some of the important events in Sumant's life.
I enjoyed Sumant's great hospitality at his family farm in Kashipur with his parents, and also at his homes in Connecticut and New Jersey.
He was always upbeat and optimistic even when he was battling kidney failure and other ailments.
He will be sorely missed by me and the multitude of other people who loved him.
Sumant's sometimes turbulent voyage in this life is now over.
May he forever be blessed with blue skies and calm seas.

Capt Sumant Bhalla a tall senior cadet captain in my batch of 1965-1967 batch was dearly loved by one and all. He shared the same birth anniversary as mine and was full of fun.

Dear Nishi, Rakhal & Anoop, Nikhil, Akhil, Neeta & Amar and Anita, There are no words to express how devastating and sad we have felt at the loss of “our Sumant”! Your loss must be insurmountable!
I have known Capt Sam since the Bishop School days way back in 1963-64, then on the Dufferin in 1965 followed by Apprenticeship in SCI in 1967! Sailed together as cadets on Desh Bandhu in 1968 Did our Masters ticket together in the BI Club in 1975! We have always been in touch since all these years! I, along with my family spent 10 Fantadtic days with him & his family at his Connecticut house in the 1986! The memories are unending!
He was a great soul, always enjoying life and joking around!
Always fun to be in his company! A great provider for his family! Gif does strange things and this was a real bolt in the dark! MSU his Soul Rest In Peace and God give you all strength to move forward with his great memories! With out sincerest Condolences! Madhu & Mona, Amitabh, Niki &Jason!

My memories start from the age of 8 when Sumant and I were in Campion School in Bombay, and I remember his huge smiling face and large ears! Sumant stayed in Campion for 2 years and then moved with the transfer of his father who was in the Indian Navy. The next time we met was on the very first day of our induction ceremony at the T. S. Dufferin and we both reconnected. The rest is history! We had some of the most wonderful times on the training ship. Our group of batch mates who belong to 1965-67 batch were probably the most close knit group I have had the pleasure of being part of and Sumant was the KING OF KINGS... you will truly be missed my dearest friend.
