Obituary
Obituary of Evelyn R. Newman
To have lived well, laughed often and loved much. To have gained the love of children and to have left the world better. life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle so, "Don't shed tears for me because I've had a very good, productive life." Evelyn R. "Evie" Newman (nee Force) passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday February 16, 2012 at Virtua Hospital in Berlin.
Mrs. Newman was born in Milton, OH, the youngest of a rural dairy farmer and school teacher's five children. Following high school "Evie" worked at the Fairmount Children's Home in Alliance, OH for 2 years before moving to the big city of Philadelphia to make a home with her brother, his wife and their 2 daughters. She worked briefly for the Curtis Publishing Co. then the Pennsylvania Railroad for 10 years. It was here she got to travel around the U.S. and developed a love for the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. "Evie" also developed a love with a railroad employee, Norman V. Newman, which brought her to the Atco section of Evesham Township, NJ and blossomed into a marriage of 60 years.
"Ev" was a doting wife, homemaker and mother who just loved her Jersey tomatoes. (She could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and sometimes did.) She resided and raised her family in Evesham Township for 51 years with a spunky sense of humor and a lifetime of Philadelphia sports, humor, practical jokes (such as a plastic worm, squirting buffalo nickel, dribble glass, fake spilled ink bottle, fly in the ice cube, etc.) and feline and canine friends. (She especially missed her Toto but gained a new sleeping partner in Twinkle who will miss her soft lap.) "Ev" was more than just a farmer's wife. She did enjoy canning vegetables (including, of course, those Jersey tomatoes). And, often the family dinner consisted of everything grown from the garden. She was thrifty to save and have a one story rancher built based on her design that she and her family have lived in since 1967.
After her children were raised, Mrs. Newman returned to work as a switchboard operator at the Archway School in Atco. She had retired from Archway once but returned on a part time basis before retiring for the final time in 2003.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 60 years Norman V. Newman. She is the mother of Deborah Newman, David Newman and Diana German. She is the proud Mom-Mom of Tyler and Ashley Newman, Richard & Raymond German and great grandmother of Tessa Cianfero. "Evie" is the sister of the late David (Carolyn & Mary), Norman "Dutch" (Nonie), Leon "Bill" (Beth) Force and Thelma (John) Meyer. She is also survived and will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
She was never mean. Never a bad thing was said about her and she never had a bad thing to say about anyone. She taught her children and grandchildren the proper values by which they continue to follow today. She was caring, giving, loving, and devoted to her family and loved life and was the super glue of the family. She is another irreplaceable member of our Greatest Generation.
."I said, send me flowers when I'm living so I can see & smell them. Not after I'm dead." Funeral services will be held privately. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of the donor's choosing.
