Obituary of Harry E. Elliott
Mr. Elliott was a lifelong resident of Audubon. During World War II he bravely served our country and was a decorated Infantry Soldier, who was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he came home to Audubon to become a postman and was affectionately known as "Harry the Mailman" to those on his routes in Collingswood, Audubon and Oaklyn. He carried dog biscuits for the dogs and candy for the kids and checked in on the elderly daily. He retired in 1974 from the Oaklyn Post Office.
He later went on to work for the Haddon Township Board of Education where he was employed as a mechanic, doing what he loved best, "fixing things". He remained there until a serious illness forced him reluctantly into his second retirement.
Mr. Elliott had many hobbies including repairing cars, trucks, radios, TVs, and almost anything that needed fixing. His three favorite hobbies were boating and fishing and antique cars. He believed in keeping his brain active and even into his 90's he was constantly learning. He learned to operate a computer and loved to surf the web searching for webcams focused on marinas around the world. He cherished life and was always eager to see what came next. He befriended everyone, loved his jobs and would lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Children and animals held a special place in his heart. He always said that at the end of his life, he wanted his last words to be "There were ups and there were downs, but. What a ride!"
Harry was a member of the Murray-Trout American Legion Post in Audubon, the Oaklyn VFW Post 4463 and the Retired Postal Employee Association.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife of 65 years Margaret (nee Topham) and his daughter Susan & her husband Robert Ottinger all of Shamong Township. Mr. Elliott is the proud grandfather of James & his wife Lisa and great grandfather of Casey & Sarah. Harry was predeceased by his siblings James, Elva, Robert and John Elliott.
