Obituary
Obituary of Howard R. Githens
My beloved cowboy took his last sunset ride, his saddle hung with care his horse placed in the barn for safe keeping. His hard working hands peacefully laid to rest. My beloved husband, love of my life passed peacefully surrounded by his family. My Howard was born and raised in Gibbsboro, NJ, where we met and were married. We were to celebrate 60 years of marriage on January 31 of this year. He is survived by his wife Marjorie and children, Debbie, Randy (Carol), Jeff (Diane), Gary (Ann), 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. Howard had worked for 48 years at Chicks Block Company before retirement, he was a past lieutenant of Kettle Run Fire Co. He was an amazing horse shoe player even with being blind in one eye as a child. His passion for horses and animals brought many happy days to all who loved to come to the farm. If you never rode a horse or pony, you were a pro after the first visit. As a kid he got the name “Chick-A-Chock” which was his time to be home “6 O’Clock” from delivering the Courier Post. As time went by his name became “Chick” At thirteen years old Chick and Carl Russell, running for a foul ball collided. Chick went blind in his left eye. Carl got a cut eye. Chick was leader of the Voorhees Apache HH Horse Club. He loved to travel in his motor home with his wife Margie, after they retired. Chick was an avid pool player. At the Green Bank Inn he loved to shoot with Rich or his son Ayrold. When Voorhees P.D. needed someone to help break and train their first 2 K-9 dogs, he was the fugitive and gave those dogs a good workout. In 1961 he shot the biggest buck deer by Buzby Sand Wash. He had it mounted. Chick went hunting many years in New York, Maine, Penns and Jersey. He was Part Owner of Stump Town Fun and Gun Club. Chick was every boys friend. He was always ready to help anybody whether he knew you or not. He was there. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Saturday from 5PM-7PM at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, in Atco, where a memorial service will begin at 7PM. Interment will be held privately.
