Obituary of John G Dyer

John G. Dyer died on April 4, 2013 in the Samaritan wing of Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mt. Holly, NJ. after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 87 years old. Mr. Dyer was born in New York City on September 1, 1925. John’s life was characterized by devotion to family; devotion to country; and a consistent entrepreneurial spirit. John was married to his wife, Virginia for 63 years. Virginia died on November 9, 2009. John frequently described Virginia in these simple words: “she was my life.” John and Virginia left three surviving children, Gini Lande of Pukalani, HI , John G. Dyer III of Burlington, VT, and Nancy Dyer-McGeoy of Medford, NJ. Mr. and Mrs. Dyer were blessed with seven grandchildren, Beth de Carion of San Francisco, CA; Katelyn Dyson of San Francisco, CA; John G. Dyer IV of Ojai, CA; Jeffrey Dyer of Kittery, ME; David Lande of Del Ray Beach, FL, Jennifer Lande, and Steven Lande of Philadelphia, PA. John also lived to see and enjoy his three great grand children, Emma Dyson, Julian Dyson, and Bruno de Carion. Mr. Dyer grew up in Rockaway Beach, NY. He attended St. John’s Prep where he was a member of the ice hockey and track teams. He was also a member of the NY Metro Sandlot Baseball Championship team known as the Flatbush Flashers and later played for a semi-pro hockey team known as the NY Ramblers. Mr. Dyer served with the famed 2nd Division Marines (Pacific Theatre) in World War II. He was part of the invasion force on the islands of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. He was also part of the post atom bomb occupation force on mainland Japan (Nagasaki). After the war John attended St. John’s University for a year on the G.I. bill, but decided to leave college to pursue business opportunities. His first venture was JAVCO Manufacturing Company. The company specialized in making aluminum storm windows and doors and was the major supplier for Levittown, PA and Willingboro, NJ. After JAVCO, John moved into the food service industry. He worked for several restaurant chains as a manager and regional manager before opening his own company, Camden Food Company. Over the next twenty years, John owned and managed restaurants of every variety, from Dunkin Donut shops to high end dining establishments. His last restaurant was the Four Winds Restaurant and Tavern in Bucks County, PA. In retirement, John founded a company known as Car-A-Van Transport, Inc. that provided low cost transportation services to non-profit agencies in South Jersey. He also played a vital role in the development of Burlington County Adult Medical Day Care Centers. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 29 at 11:45 AM at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ ; followed by an interment ceremony at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ precisely at 2:30 PM.
