Obituary of Farra L. Read
Farra L. (Jerry) Read, Jr. Beloved husband of Doris (nee Bove) was born in Bremerton, WA on May 17, 1932. He was the son of the late Dr, Farra L. Read, Sr. , MD and Sarah Kathrine (nee Farre) Read. He grew up in a Naval Officer's family and traveled to many countries as well as throughout the United States. Jerry is a graduate of the University of Washington, Seattle with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration, majoring in foreign trade. Following in his father's footsteps, he joined the US Navy where he spent 25 years achieving the rank of Commander. At 42, he retired from the military and went to work for the Condenser Division of DeLaval Turbine, Florence, NJ as the Marine Sales Administrator for the next 15 years. He was a member of the Father Harold Koeppen Council 7774 since 1989 where he served as Grand Knight and financial secretary. In 1990, he received his Fourth Degree joining the Archbishop C.J. Damiano Assembly in Williamstown, NJ where he became a member of the color corps. He was the Faithful Navigator of the assembly from 1998-2000. He served four years as district deputy and received many awards for his outstanding performance. He is currently a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Assembly, Waterford. As a member of Sacred Heart RC Church, Christ the Redeemer Parish, he was an Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Sacristan. He was a lifetime member of the Military Officer's Association of America, American Legion Post #311, Atco and the VFW Post #6253, Berlin, NJ. The Read's came to America in 1650 and other ancestors as early as 1640. Jerry was extremely proud to have ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War which qualified him to be a member of the Son's of the American Revolution (SAR), where he served as President of the South Jersey Chapter. He was also a lifetime member of the Society of Colonial Wars and the Society of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America. As a member of the Holiday Rambler RV Club, he served as Chapter 22 President and also the State Manager. He is survived by his wife of 43 yrs, Doris and three children, Farra L. Read, III of Tacoma, WA, Charles K. Read of Kenmore, WA and Kara Read-Spangler(Mark) of Roseville, CA. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Other surviving family members are Albert Bove of Mt. Laurel, NJ, June and Charles Nelson of Westmont, NJ, Rosemarie Raubertas of Cedar Brook, NJ and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Relative and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and again Thursday Morning 8:45am to 9:45am at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike in Atco. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30am at Christ the Redeemer Parish/Sacred Heart Church, Rte. 73, Cedar Brook, NJ. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Christ the Redeemer Parish, 318 Carl Hasselhan Dr., Atco, NJ 08004.
