Obituary of Leola Sengleterry
Leola Sengleterry was born December 1, 1912 to Reverend Spencer McIntosh and Mazerene Lowery McIntosh. She was born and raised in Lynchburg, South Carolina. She graduated high school after completing her education in Sumpter and Lee Counties, South Carolina. She was raised in a loving Christian home. She was the youngest of three girls and the middle eldest of nine children: Julia Muldrew, Malachi, Phyllis, James(Son), Lucius(Ting), Ernest, Spencer Jr.(Man) and Lawrence(LA) McIntosh.
Leola was baptized at the New Antioch Baptist Church founded by Reverend Spencer McIntosh. In 1972, she joined Greater Love Chapel C.O.G.I.C. where she became The mother of the church. She was responsible for setting up and assisting the Pastor in giving communion to the members of the Church. She was the Treasure of the Flower Club and was the Chairperson of the Womans Club. She was the greatest Church Mother that the church ever had.
She moved to Philadelphia as a young lady where she met and married Albertus Smith. From this union was born a daughter, Alberta(Bunchie). Many years after the passing of her husband, Leola married Nelson Sengletary and settled in Elwood, New Jersey.
After several years of nursing the sick, Leola worked at the Deer Park Cookie Factory in Hammonton, NJ until she retired. Again, she returned to nursing, this time for her ailing husband, mother and daughter to whom she devoted all of her time and energy until their passing.
Leola sold her home and moved into a retirement community where she enjoyed independent living until she was no longer able to live alone. At that time she agreed to accept the help of her two grandsons, George(Chip) and Eric and went to live in Eric's home with his wife Kim and their three sons.
Her illness progressed to nursing home care, and after a brief hospitalization she succumbed to her illness.
Leola leaves to mourn her loss and rejoice in her memory: one brother, Lawrence McIntosh of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, two grandsons, George and Eric Harper, one granddaughter-in-law, Kim Harper, Three great-grandsons, Eric Jr, James and Isaiah Harper, all of New Jersey, one aunt, Ophelia Utsey of Orangeburg, South Carolina and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
