Obituary of Mary E. Spiegel

Mary E. Spiegel (nee Pigott) 93, of Hammonton passed away peacefully November 23, 2004, at The Heritage Assisted Living surrounded by close family members, caring staff and hospice. Prior to living at the Heritage, she had resided for over 10 years with her loving daughter and son-in-law, Peg and Mitch Hitman, in Hammonton, who will miss her deeply. A devoted wife and mother, she was predeceased by husband David in 1991 after 60 years of marriage; her son, Robert, in 1996; both of Venice, Fl; a brother, F. Willis Pigott, in 1941. Her parents were Erma R. (Davis) and Harry A.Pigott. Born and raised in Cedar Brook, NJ, Mary was a player. She spent her teen years in Ocean City, NJ, where she played violin in the orchestra and all the sports that girls were allowed to play which included roller skating, marbles, hockey, basketball, and swimming. She loved the water and once saved a person from drowning. In her middle years, she loved to play games with her grandchildren, cook for family gatherings, volunteer at Shore Memorial Hospital, knit, crochet, swim, boat and fish with her husband. In later years, in Venice, FL, she enjoyed playing in the Ridgewood Park Kitchen Band that entertained at nursing homes, dancing at the Elks Lodge, playing the organ, ukulele, cards, and shuffleboard, reading, and making afghans for family members. She was loved and will be sadly missed by her granddaughters, Debra Eberly and husband Chris of Warrenton, VA; Tamara Mailhot and husband Andre of Oxford, MA; grandsons, Samuel Hitman of Denver, CO; Harry Spiegel and partner Cheryl Volta of Berlin, NJ; Mark Spiegel and wife Patty of Cedar Brook, NJ; her sister Elizabeth Alkazin and husband William and niece Becky Stock and husband Bruce also of Cedar Brook; niece Mary Conrad and husband Ron of Altoona, PA; daughter-in-law Kay Spiegel and partner Edgar Gay of Venice, FL and her many new friends from the Heritage, staff and caregivers. She was the proud great-grandmother of Aaron and Matthew Mailhot; Alex, Jacob and Leah Eberly; Kelsey and Zack Spiegel; Katie, Samantha and Robbie Spiegel. Services will be private.
