Tony Turco posted a condolence
Dear Valerie:
Marita and I are saddened to hear the news of Mel's passing. I was in total shock at the news of his death. Although words can never really convey the thoughts, concern, caring and sadness that we share with you, I just wanted you to know that we are thinking of you, crying with you and praying with you. Please know that I am sharing your grief and tears with you and you are very much in our thoughts. Please pass along our condolences to the rest of Mel's family.
I thought of Mel often and regret that I was not able to get in touch with the two of you before this.
I am saddened at the lose of a dear friend and I hope that I hear something when arrangements are made as I would like to be there for Mel.
Take care of yourself

Val: I was surprised and saddened to read today of Mel’s death. It’s been many years since I saw him last—or since I visited with both of you at the old house in Loretta street—but not since I thought of him. Mel was a larger than life character who left an indelible impression; I’m truly sorry we didn’t keep in touch. I admired him for his accomplishments but mainly I always enjoyed him for being who he was, for his company, his wit and imagination, for the breath of his interests. Once again my most sincere condolences. Jim Kempner
