Wally was a 'once in a lifetime friend'.
To have the added bonus of his being an aviation mentor and long term flying partner makes his sudden loss so difficult to process.
I found my thoughts laced with fond memories over the past week since hearing of his failing health. But even more noticeable was how many times in an average day I've thought of Wally in random events that are part of my normal daily routine. Times I've thought of him in reference to everyday items, things that now jump out when his absence suddenly brings attention to our loss.
Since meeting him 42 years ago at Atlantic Aviation, becoming first acquaintances, then close friends and ultimately flying partners, I have never known anyone who possessed the kindness, easy going and down to earth approach to life events. His knowledge and expertise in all things aviation was well known by everyone he touched in their aviation careers...and that was a lot of pilots. He would go out of his way to help many a new young aviator 'make his bones" by passing on his common sense, seat-of- the pants approach to flying, and giving them 'stick-time' whenever possible.
Although I taught my two sons to fly, I would assure that I sent them to 'Uncle Wally' to check their progress, to give them phase checks and recommendation rides before they would go for their FAA practical exams.
The finest 2 years in my 50 years of aviation were flying my Learjet around the country with Wally as my flying partner. There is something unique about the closeness a pilot achieves with his fellow aviator, sharing both professional and personal times in the close proximity of a cockpit. Precious times, memories I will hold dear to my heart forever.
I particularity enjoyed the many $100 hamburgers we had flying for fun to Kent Island,Tangiers and numerous local airports over the years. The many 'Breakfasts with Wally' my wife and I shared and lunches with special friends that burned deep memories that will never fade.
Wally's achievement of the Wright Brothers MASTER PILOT award marked not only a 50 year calendar event but represented the true meaning of the title. "Master Pilot"... the phrase defined who he was. .
How nice it would be if we could someday fly again for that $100 hamburger. I'll seek him out up there. He'll likely be restoring another classic airplane in his pristine hangar, talking flying to close friends long departed, with a smile on his face.
I'll forever remember his special phrase..." Good friends need to stay in touch"
I'll miss my good friend every day

The "Drum Battle" of the 21st century between Wally Murray and Charley Braun, September 28, 2016. This was the last time I visited with Wally . I am so glad that we did this and captured it on video as well. Wally was a special friend of mine since 1985 when he joined his favorite drummer's fan club, Buddy Rich. I will miss our twice a year get together and our frequent telephone calls to catch up on things. God Bless Wally, Sue, and family.

Wally was one of a kind. He was a gentleman, and a gentle man at a time when these characteristics seem to have gone out of favor. He was respectful of others and of their opinions, even if those opinions were radically opposed to his own. Wally was aware of events, local, national and international, and, in his own quiet way able to discuss them knowledgeably.
Wally’s first love (after Sue, of course) was aviation. The walls of his office in the upstairs loft at home were covered with citations and pictures and plaques, attesting to his many years of accomplishments in and around an almost mind-boggling assortment of airplanes. His depth of knowledge about all things aviation was profound. Wally was a consummate professional and one of only two people who I trusted to fly my plane without me in it.
On Sue, “She was the best thing that ever happened to me” he told me more than once. And from the warmth and love in his voice, it was evident that he really meant it.
Wally, you flew safely for many years. May this last flight be as smooth and as safe as all of those that came before, and may your final destination be bathed in sunlight throughout eternity. Rest in peace, dear friend.
Mike

I met Wally through his only Niece and Sister Doris. He and Sue came to visit yearly to Florida and we always looked forward to it. Chris and I had the pleasure of visiting Sue and Wally in NJ and truly had great times. LOVE Wally's World. His upstairs office area. including drums, pictures of the planes and all of the reel to reel tape decks.
Enjoyed flying to Sun N Fun in his plane and always enjoyed his deep knowledge of flying, music and history.
God Bless

Wally my one and only Uncle ever! I loved him more than one can imagine. We looked a lot alike, I used to say "are you sure you're not my father and you gave me to your sister to raise?!"
I always admired my Uncle. I would brag to my friends he's not only a pilot but the best drummer around. I will miss him deeply....

We mourn the passing of a special friend of 62 years.
I met Wally at Cavoli's Airport where I would occasionally rent an airplane and Wally was beginning his aviation career. It was discovered that he also had an interest in music and we spent many hours either on a bandstand playing night clubs or weddings. Wally made aviation his lifetime career and excelled at the profession of being a commercial pilot.
In all my years of knowing Wally, he was admired by everyone that met him. I considered Wally to be one of my best friends.

I am going to miss my co-worker, my shooting mentor, my breakfast buddy, the teller of tales all things aviation, the only pilot I know whose pilot's license has a single digit number and was signed by Orville Wright himself. He leaves this world a better place and me a better person. I have enjoyed this path traveled with you my friend. Thank you.
Where you are now its always CAVU, enjoy the ride on top.

Dear Sue & the families of Wally,
Words do not come easy when we faced the news of Wally's passing.
We are so very sorry for your loss - especially you Sue. We feel the depth of your painful loss. It is known you are the sincere love of his life and you both traveled down this unknown rocky road together right through to the end.
We have fond memories of you both at gatherings and parties. Oh how Wally loved to party & looked forward to the coffee & sweets with his friends. We shall remember him on his stage in his home playing drum solos. Those walls were rocken..... These are the times we shall hold tight to.While we remember his great & interesting stories as we all sat around and enjoyed each others company. He is a great man and was always up-beat.
Wally, the only comfort we take to heart & accept is that you are no longer in pain. But we'd be selfish not to let you go when you did. We miss you already and you've taken a piece of our hearts with you. We hope to see you once again when we cross over. RIP Dear Friend until we meet again.
Sincere condolences to you Sue and Wally's family, keep strong and keep the faith to get you through these trying times. XO's K&J
